    Default /var 84% full

    I'm getting a daily warning:

    Drive Warning: /hda7 (/var) is 84% full

I'm a newbie so what's in here and what do I do to clear and make more room?

Also is there any way that you can just FTP into the Root? I get an error with my root username and password. I used to just FTP as root with Plesk.

    Thanks for any help!

Go to /var/log and remove all files with a digit after the filename (or copy them first elsewhere if you want to archive them)

I want to be sure that I'm deleting correctly so I'll know how to do this in the future. This is what my /var/log reads:

    root@srv1 [~]# dir /var/log
    ./ cron.1 exim_paniclog ksyms.0 maillog.offset rpmpkgs.4 spooler.4
    ../ cron.2 exim_paniclog.1 ksyms.1 messages sa/ squid/
    bandwidth/ cron.3 exim_paniclog.2 ksyms.2 messages.1 secure vbox/
    boot.log cron.4 exim_paniclog.3 ksyms.3 messages.2 secure.1 wtmp
    boot.log.1 cups/ exim_paniclog.4 ksyms.4 messages.3 secure.2 wtmp.1
    boot.log.2 dcpumon/ exim_rejectlog ksyms.5 messages.4 secure.3 xferlog
    boot.log.3 dmesg exim_rejectlog.1 lastlog messages.offset secure.4 xferlog.offset
    boot.log.4 exim_mainlog exim_rejectlog.2 maillog pgsql* secure.offset
    chkservd.log exim_mainlog.1 exim_rejectlog.3 maillog.1 rpmpkgs spooler
    cp4install.log exim_mainlog.2 exim_rejectlog.4 maillog.2 rpmpkgs.1 spooler.1
    cpupdate.log exim_mainlog.3 fax/ maillog.3 rpmpkgs.2 spooler.2
    cron exim_mainlog.4 httpd/ maillog.4 rpmpkgs.3 spooler.3

I can delete the files such as:

    boot.log.1
    boot.log.2
    boot.log.3
    boot.log.4

I don't want to mess up & thanks again for your help!

    yes you can remove those...

Also your in a *nix machine now.. use ls not dir

also ls -lh will show you the file sizes of each file if you care to look.

this might help find the starting path too..

    cd /var;du -h --max-depth=1

Default Having a same type of problem

    Hello Friends,

I am having the same type of problem. Hope you gurus can help me out.

    My problem is that both:
/var and /usr are getting filled up too quickly.

I don't know what is getting added to them which is causing them to show /var = 75% fulll and /usr = 86% full.

I have disabled the accounts backup but it don't helped. Can you please tell me how and what to empty from these partitions to make the spacce free again.

Acutally I have my users accounts on that server and I don't want to lose their data. Please help.

    Thanks a billion times ................
