/var 84% full

I'm getting a daily warning:

Drive Warning: /hda7 (/var) is 84% full

I'm a newbie so what's in here and what do I do to clear and make more room?

Also is there any way that you can just FTP into the Root? I get an error with my root username and password. I used to just FTP as root with Plesk.

Go to /var/log and remove all files with a digit after the filename (or copy them first elsewhere if you want to archive them)

I want to be sure that I'm deleting correctly so I'll know how to do this in the future. This is what my /var/log reads:

I can delete the files such as:

boot.log.1
boot.log.2
boot.log.3
boot.log.4

I don't want to mess up & thanks again for your help!

yes you can remove those...

Also your in a *nix machine now.. use ls not dir

also ls -lh will show you the file sizes of each file if you care to look.

this might help find the starting path too..

cd /var;du -h --max-depth=1

Hello Friends,

I am having the same type of problem. Hope you gurus can help me out.

My problem is that both:
/var and /usr are getting filled up too quickly.

I don't know what is getting added to them which is causing them to show /var = 75% fulll and /usr = 86% full.

I have disabled the accounts backup but it don't helped. Can you please tell me how and what to empty from these partitions to make the spacce free again.

Acutally I have my users accounts on that server and I don't want to lose their data. Please help.
