/var/account multiple files

I started noticing few days ago an increase in the /var partition on daily basis.

traced it to /var/account where there is

account
acct.0
acct.1
acct.2
acct.3
acct.4

what are these files for ? can they be safely deleted ?

That is very weird, it just started about a week ago and keep duplicating:
