Default very slow loading cpanel splash page

When first logging into cpanel and bringing up the cpanel homepage or splash page or whatever it's called, it takes minutes to load it -- it's very very slow. Clicking on a link within cpanel loads the page as it should, in a second or two. Anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

I see two solutions in the forums -- first, delete /etc/password.lock. I tried that and it didn't do a thing. Second, update cpanel with upcp and restart both cpanel and apache. I tried that as well and the problem still exists. I'm not sure what else to try -- everything was working fine before yesterday. The system load isn't high at all, and there's plenty of free memory, so this isn't a problem with available resources.

I see that a new user has been created recently in /etc/shadow -- the user is called "named", so perhaps this new problem has something to do with a cpanel update of bind?

Yes, I realize that Named is a legitimate user, but in shadow it's right below a user I created 2 days ago -- and the entries in there seem to be more or less chronological (accounts created more recently are on the bottom). The entry for named appears at the bottom of the list, which is why I thought that perhaps cpanel changed something. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Try these in order (named shouldn't have anything to do wth it):

    service chkservd stop
    service cpanel stop

Check that all copies of cpsrvd have stopped, then:

    rm -fv /etc/*.lock
    service cpanel start
    service chkservd start

Now check whether you can login properly.

That seems to have done the trick. Many thanks, Chirpy.
