    Default VPS Server Software

    Hi

Ive been thinking about using one of our servers for running VPS as it has spare resources. I have no experience with VPS so im after some opinions from you guys.

    1. Is there any software out there, other than Virtuozzo, to allow a whm server to be a VPS and how hard is it to install?

    2. Would it be possible to make a normal server with accounts on into a VPS?

    3. If I was to create, say 4, VPS on one box, would the main config (ASSP, CSF, etc) run over into the VPS as well?

    4. What are your experiences with running VPS on a server? Good or bad?

Any advie would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers
    Chriz

Usually is a bad idea to run both VPS and cPanel on the same (hardware) server. It's better to run cPanel only in VPS.

    1. There is OpenVZ (open-source, also made by Parallels like Virtuozzo)
    4. Very good
    Joomla & Magento cPAddons
Joomla 2.x added as cPanel Addon (free)

You could also look at Xen and VMWare vSphere (which has a free edition).

Do you mean move an existing cPanel server into a VPS? I would assume you would need another box that is running the virtual server and then migrate the accounts off the physical server onto the virtual server. There are bound to be some sort of file conflicts, it is not worth it if this is a production system.

No. Think of a virtual server as a completely isolated environment - just like a physical server.

We currently offer cPanel inside Virtuozzo containers to our customers and we have not encountered any issues yet.

Here is the current list of the supported virtual environments (for VPS servers) compatible with cPanel/WHM:
    FreeVPS
    Linux®-VServer™
    ServerXchange®
    User-Mode Linux
    Virtual Iron®
    Virtuozzo™
    VMware® Server, ESX Server
    XenEnterprise™, XenExpress™, XenServer™
Please note that at the time of writing cPanel does not yet support VPS licenses for the FreeBSD operating system (OS). For Linux, you might consider the latest of either CentOS v5 or RHEL v5 that are both supported.

Yes. For the firewall the work, the main node must have the iptables installed. OpenVZ uses the main nodes hardware and configuration.
