Default web page access through ssl

I thought that one can ftp a file to public_html as test.shtml.

    1) To access the file without ssl use:
    http://domain.ext/test.shtml

    2) To access the file with ssl use:
    https://domain.ext/test.shtml

But in the second case (SSL), page is not found. Am I missing something?

    Thanks,
    DE

do you have SSL enabled Crt installed? (does not look like it)

do you have a dedicated ip assigned to your domain?

You mean I can not just access the page with SSL and just click through the warning about not having a certification from an authorize agent.

Also you mean to say that I have to have a static IP for each account with SSL.

Both of these sound like limitation that I did not have on other control panel...

    Any insights would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

As dalem said, in order to run SSL on your website you need a dedicated IP and an SSL certificate installed !

Go to your web hosting provider, purchase those items and ask them to install it for you !

Let me try again. In the past, you could access any file in public_html directory of the domain by using https: which would force the SSL (and the lock in IE)

If the site did not have an SSL then browser would post the normal pop up which basically says this site does not have valid SSL from a known source. But if you clicked on the approperiate box it would continue.

In my installation, I just get a 404 error if I try to go to an existing page using https:

By the way, I do not have an ISP! I am the ISP want-to-be or ISP in-training... Anyhow, I am trying to understand this before moving site into the web server.

    Thanks,

You need to have a dedicated IP and an SSL certificate installed to be able to use https://. Unless I am wrong there is now way around it.

You can go to http://www.startcom.org and get a free one. I would use this for testing and buy one when you get everything worked out.

But just putting https in front of the domain is not making it secure nor will it even be a valid url.

If I am wrong someone plesae let me know.

if you do not enable port 443 for the domain in question it will never work

you need to install a certificate on the site it does not magically appear

you can create a self signed certificate by using SSL/TLS menu in you WHM

As mentioned previously, each SSL site must have a unique IP address. There is no such thing as virtual hosts where SSL is concerned so the files of one web enabled folder will be served no matter when the IP is accessed. This is not a control panel limitation, but a webserver limitation (Apache). Having said this, it is possible to access various /public_html folders through SSL if mod_userdir is enabled for your server. For example:

https://yourSSLsite.tld will display files in the users /public_html directory.
https://yourSSLsite.tld/~otherusername/test.shtml will display files in the otherusername /public_html directory
