What is the best free way to help stop a dDos attack

I was just wondering what the best way to slow down or stop, and block a ddos attack.

There is no free way to block a real high volume DDOS attack. You may try CSF OR APF firewalls for a light weight attacks though.

For a high end attack, software will not do you much good. For low end, I agree with the above, and you can also add in mod_evasive, and set it to ban IP's that connect to many times per second. I wrote an install for cPanel a while back:
