What is this command doing for such a long period?

Does anybody here know why command tar, according to top, is running continually for longer periods using 95%+ of CPU resources? (command: tarpczfgbilder.tar.gzgbilder according to 'Show Current CPU Usage' in WHM)

tar is part of the backup, but is gilder one of your users? presumably a large one?

Thanks, but crontab has had

0 3 * * * /scripts/upcp

for 4 months so why would it suddenly start taking backups at this time and not at 3 o'clock in the middle of the night as usually? - Also, I'm not sure what you mean with user gilder - what part of it do you think is a user?

Your command, with spaces
tar pczf gbilder.tar.gz gbilder
by default, cpanel uses the username for the directory (under /home) and for the tar archive it creates using pkgacct

I strongly suspect a user backing up his site through cpanel(the user control panel)
if it's a large site, during peak times, it can literally take hours, as it's terribly inefficient(I did notice cpanel tells you I'll send email when I'm done) so it might operate under lower priority, and so will take a long time...

Thanks perlchild. There is a user gbilder at the server and he uses about 1.3GB of disk space so he is probably taking a backup - thanks for clarifying all of you
