When you forward email does a copy stay local?

Just looking for clarification.


Example:

some one sends an email to my domain.

I have set up a forwarder through cpanel to forward it to a yahoo account.


Question.

Are two copies then created.(one stays at the local domain and one go to yahoo)?

Also I have seen some posts about setting up .forward files. Is this still good form or is better to use the cpanel interface to accomplish any forwarding.

Yes, two copies are created. One stays in your domain account, and a copy is then sent to yahoo or whereever. You will recieve the exact same email in two different places. However, this can be a little dangerous if you trust this process a lot, as if your domain account stops recieving or sending email for some unknown reason, and you dont know about it (ie mail is not down, but not sending or recieving) you will not recieve message anywhere. Nice to use if you stay on top of it.

Cpanel forwarding is easier to setup and manage, and just as good if not better.

Actually whether a copy stays on your server or not depends on whether or not the email address is also a POP account.

For example, let's say your default is username@domain.com, and you set up a forwarder to forward somethingelse@domain.com to the yahoo account, your server will not keep copies of the mail because it is not a POP account. If you want 2 copies, you need to create a POP and forwarder. If you only want it forwarded, no POP, just the forwarder.
