Default WHM Generating Bad .tar files

My provider botched a hardware upgrade recently and needed to do an emergency re-image of my machine. I wasn't concerned since I'm smart and do daily backups to an offsite server. Sucks to be me though because every single .tar.gz file was corrupt.

I've tried all the tricks offered on this forum but I constantly get:

Sorry, the copy failed. Unable to find the cpanel user file
    Further investigation reveals:

    Code:
gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
    tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
    tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
So all the .tar files are corrupt. I've tried every single one of the daily, weekly and monthly backup .tar files and this process worked perfectly around March of last year.

I'd been running 10.8.2 since May and hadn't had a need to restore any accounts. Admins, it might be a good idea to test one out....

Hi there Capnqwest, could you tell me what steps you are using to restore the backup? I would like to test a couple of my backups done through WHM (ftp), but am not clear on the proper method of restoring a backup via WHM.

    thanks,

    hi,
to restore the backup, place the tar file in /home and use

    from SSH
    /scripts/unpkgacct username

    from WHM
    restore a full backup/cpmove.

    see ya,

yep, this is exactly what I'm using. And on two different cpanel servers.
