Default xx.xxx.xxx.xxx/test not work, but ip/test/ works

    Hello,

Using: WHM 7.4.2 cPanel 7.4.2-E124 on FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE

I am troubleshooting a problem with our webserver.

The issue is that “http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/test” will give a 404.

But “http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/test/” will find the page.

I’ve narrowed the problem down to the fact that I am using an IP to go to this domain AND the fact that the DNS is not transferred yet.

It appears that "http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/test" (note there is ot trailing /) will attempt to redirect to the domain name where it will not find "test" because it doesn't exist on that server where the DNS is pointed to currently.

Can anyone help me in getting the URL to work without the trailing / before I transfer the DNS for the domain?

    Thanks.

The answer is simple albeit twofold.
    1> that's how it works
2> technically, "test" is not a page. test.html would be a page. http://xx.xxx.xx/test looks for a directory"test" which of course doesn't exist in your example.
So, the easy way is to use / or the entire (correct" path.

Thanks for your reply. Actually I am referring to directories and not files. "test" is a directory.

    Any other ideas?

You can "tweak" apache to allow surfing to <IP>/~<ACCOUNT> in addition to <IP>/~<ACCOUNT>/

I do not recall the exact syntax at the moment.
