Why are so many message failing a the pipe?

It's impossible to say without you quoting the full pipe error message from the logs and showing us what the pipe command is that you're using in the Filter in question.

The most common cause I've experienced for piped mail failing is when a filter is set to pipe mail to a script (PHP or Perl) and the script to which the mail is piped fails to run correctly: either failing completely due to insufficient permissions or a syntax error when executing.

You'd most certainly get mail piping errors if you tried to pipe mail to something that doesn't exist - an incorrect path to a script or an invalid email address.
