We had someone working on our website for us (from the ground up) and they have since decided that it wasn't worth their time. We are willing to start over since the files are a complete mess however, if we start over they will still have access to our files because they have our password. I did change the password but it is still possible to log in with the old password. Is there any way to start fresh with a new account and still keep my domain name? I am very new to this but am working hard to understand the terms used. Thank you.

Once you have changed a password for an account, the old password should not work. I recommend you contact your hosting provider to more closely analyze this issue.

Indeed. Also you might check the FTP accounts section of your cPanel to see if there is an account setup there. If yes, change it's password or remove it/them.
