I need to add additional MX records to a domain
for a secondary backup mail server,
I know that to start I need to add a new MX record with the secondary mail
server, but then I'm lost ... do I need to add an A record for the secondary server as well?

can anyone tell me the steps to go about this?

    yeah..

first add an A record for say "mx1" with the "secondary mailserver IP". Then add MX for mx1.domain.com with appropriate priority.

mx1 IN A "secondary server IP"

    MX 10 mx1.domain.com
