I've read dozens of posts on nameservers here and at WHT, and I still can't come up with a definitive answer on what needs to be done to add nameservers to a cpanel server. I don't care whether cpanel recognizes their existence or not, I just want them to work.

So what, exactly, defines a nameserver? The files in /var/named? Is there anything important in httpd.conf? Are the IP addresses for nameservers defined anywhere other than in A records in /var/named/conf files?

Maybe it would be helpful if someone could spell out how to do the following without using the WHM functions:

    1. add the first nameserver to a new box (no accounts on it at all)

    2. add a second nameserver that shares the IPs of an existing nameserver

    3. add a new nameserver using different IPs

    4. (for bonus points): which files need to be edited so that WHM recognizes the nameservers and lists them under "Manage Nameserver IPs".

I have both RHE and CentOS boxes, if it makes a difference.

    Thanks in advance.
