Hello. I'm completely new to web page managment. I'm just trying to figure out some simple basics. I don't know how to get any web content to display on my site. I'm not even sure what is considered my site. If I type my domain adress, domainname.net, for example, I get an index page. If I type in ,I guess, my domain IP adress, I get the Cpanel/Apache "placeholder" page. If I type in "ftp" instead of http, followed by the IP adress, I get an ftp index page. I guess it's the "placeholder" page where my web content will go. I don't know how this works. I thought my web content would display at my domain though, instead of the index page I get when I type my domain, domainname.net, in the adress bar. I thought the way it was supposed to be was like, someone types in my domain (domainname.net) into an adress bar, and they get my web page, not an index page. Instead, the only web content I've got, the placeholder page, displays at an IP adress, not a domain name.
So, I'm confused. I don't understand the relationships here. I mean, what is my http index page for? What is my ftp index page for? And what is the page for where the Apache/Cpanel placeholder page is?
I need a very basic tutorial. I'm using Dreamweaver MX. I followed the tutorial provided in the knowledgebase support section on "pronet's" website. I uploaded a webpage to my site. So now it shows up on my domain index page. I was able to do that, but I still don't know where my web page will be, like how I or anyone else will find it, and how I get the content to show on it as my web page.
I think I need to change the placeholder page, but why isn't that page found at "mydomain.net"? Even if I knew how to change the placeholder page with I guess like an html page I wrote, is that still going to be displayed at "http://IPADRESS/" and not at "http://mydomain.net"?
Maybe my questions fall outside the scope of "Cpanel" forums because they are so basic. I'd appreciate it if anyone knows of maybe another forum they'd point me too that might help, if that's the place for me. Even pronets knowledgebase seems to begin over my head. I think cpanel forums do too.
Like I said, I'm absolutely new to having my own web page. I didn't want to go with web hosts which do do everything for you, like "pagebuilders" and stuff. I pretty much want to do it from scratch and see how it's done. So I don't mind the difficulty. I just need to know where to start.
I'd even rather start off with basic html and a text editor than use dreamweaver. I just wouldn't know how to upload an html document. I think I would just upload it to my web site with an ftp server, like dreamweaver does. But then what is the ftp index page site for?
Thank you for your help
