    Hi

I am quite new to all this, I have my live site working but want to create a development area to learn and test new things before putting them on live. I have created a sub domain but am unsure of the best way to 'copy'/'ftp' all the folders across from live.

I have backups of the home directory and databases etc but I don't know how to restore them to the new dev.mydomain.co.uk instead of the live site.

Also, how do I ensure that by copying the files across from live they are then looking at the new dev databases I have created, so that nothing I do on the dev area will have an impact on live.

Is a subdomain the right way to go about this? Perhaps I should be looking to get myself a completely separate domain for dev, if this is the answer then again, how to I get a copy from my backups to point at the new domain.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. I have been trawling through documentation and FAQs but can't find anything detailed enough to help me.

    Thanks in anticipation
    Paula:confused:

With regards to the subdomain, did you create that via the cPanel interface or as a completely separate account via WHM?

    Hi

I created one sub domain through the cPanel tool which is http://dev.mysite.co.uk

I also created just a new folder which is therefore http://mysite/dev

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Paula

In that case, you would simply copy the files from public_html to the directory hosting dev.mysite.co.uk (which appears to be public_html/dev in your example above).

As for ensuring only the development databases are being affected, that would be a re-configuration of whatever scripts you are using to interact with the database.
