Anyone using cPanel on a Rackspace Cloud Server?

Yes but why should they support it if you are renting an unmanaged cloud server from them? And if you went for a managed service, firstly it will cost a bomb and a half, and secondly they'd want you to use their control panel, which would probably be a better choice anyway if you were willing to pay for their managed service!

Actually not really. Have you seen their web control panel for cloud sites? It sucks.

I installed cpanel on a RS Cloud with no problem. RS only supports the environment and OS, you are responsible for supporting everything else on top of that, including cpanel, apache, mysql, etc. IF you can not handle supporting these things then the Cloud hosting is not for you and you should leverage a more managed service like a dedicated server, or a professional to assist you.

Do you think I´ll be safe to rent (2) separate Cloud Servers from them (256mb/10gb instances) to run my cPanel DNS Only DNS servers? I think their price at $10.95 per server is excellent and wanted to take advantage of being able to claim initially that our DNS is "on the cloud".

Thoughts or any confirmations from others using Rackspace Cloud Servers for DNS Clusters with WHM/cPanel?

The sales representative I chatted with (Charles) said that he uses Cloud Servers for his own DNS Server and that they work great for that. Even with 4gb bandwidth/in, 4gb bandwidth/out, the pair are under $25 USD.

He mentioned that I could request one in Dallas another in Chicago. Will that be sufficient?

Yes this can be done no problem.

How did you guys manager to create your own nameserver and make it work???
You have to use cpanel DNS ONLY, then its just a matter of connecting your cpanel server to them to sync.

1. get a cloud server(s) from rackspace, the most basic one, I think its about 7 bucks a month.
2. install cpanel dns, it is literally just a matter of running some ssh instructions.

On the first one, I ran into a couple of issues so I got someone on odesk.com to complete it for me for 25 bucks.

I now have 4 different dns servers with three different companies in 4 different geographical locations and it costs me less than $50 per month.

But cPanel already has something like cPanel DNSONLY correct? BIND does that.
See, I put dns1 and dns2 from rackspace on DreamHost panel (where I registered my domain).
On Rackspace DNS panel, I added dns1.magentobr.com and dns2.magentobr.com with A value to my cloud server IP with the cpanel.
When I ping my dns, it pings my domain server.
So I added a domain to my cpanel, it added everything right, but it won't ping, it won't open, nothing.
So I think it's some problem with cpanel.
I also had DNSONLY installed and it didn't work.

Almost mate.

To do dns clustering you need at least 1 main cpanel server which hosts web sites and at least one DNS ONLY cpanel server.

HINT: cpanel dns only is a limited version of cpanel and is free. you cant host websites on cpanel dns only servers.

The cpanel server that hosts the web sites, you would configure that to "allow dns clustering" and you would connect it to the DNS ONLY cpanel server(s).

Here is a rough diagram showing how I have mine configured and hope it helps to understand.

This allows me to give redundant dns over 4 different nameservers.

dns-clustering.gif

Its actually a clever and affordable solution to providing customers with redundant dns.

Yeah, that's how I have set up (but only one cpanel server, not dnsonly).
My problem I think it's on dreamhost (where I registered my domain).
I changed nameserver to dns1. and dns2. from rackspace.
On rackspace dns panel, added my dns1.magentobr.com and dns2.magentobr.com value A with cpanel server IP.
If I ping dns1.magentobr.com, it gets the right IP.
That's all I had to do? Did I do it right?
I also tried added my nameserver on DreamHost and added a custom value A with my cpanel server IP, that also didnt work.
I am starting to think its dreamhost problem. lol
Talked to 5 people, 2 said I could do it, 2 said I couldnt and 1 said he doesnt knwo what I am talking about. LOL
Emailed godaddy, they said with 2 server or 2 IPs just set my nameserver and put IP. Simple as that.
Where did you set your nameserver?

Where did you set your nameserver?
To register a nameserver, you need to do it at the REGISTRAR where you registered the domain.

"Registering" a nameserver might be confused with "setting" namesevers.

SETTING nameservers simply means that you update a domain name with nameserver addresses.

REGISTERING nameservers means applying a record into the A-Z Root Server system and this can only be done by a official registrar, ie the place where you registered the domain.

This link here says that there is no ns1.magentobr.com
DNS Lookup for ns1.magentobr.com

Probably all you have done is gone into rackspace (where magentobr.com has its nameservers pointed to) and created ns1 + ns2 and given A names. This wont work properly, you have to REGISTER the nameservers at the highest level which will be through dreamhost.

This is what you need to do to have redundant dns servers using cpanel dns only.

1. go to rackspace cloud and create two cheap centos servers
2. write down the ip of both (at this point you dont need to configure the server or anything)
3. Find out from dreamhost how to REGISTER nameservers for magentobr.com
4. register the nameservers for ns1.magentobr.com + ns1.magentobr.com using the two ip's

At this point you will be able to query ns1 + ns2 and it will return the ip's of the two servers you created.

5. install cpanel dns only on both virtual servers you created earlier on
6. configure your main cpanel server with dns clustering to connect to the two dns servers.
7. voila...you are done.

Lets be clear. I am not a expert on these things, I am only telling you exactly what I have done and what I have done works perfect. I have global, exterely quick, reliable and redundant dns at very low cost. Even big companies like hostgator dont have redundant dns servers like my tiny spec of a company.

....

You have been very helpful! THANKS A LOT!
Ok, more questions, LOL.
I just emailed DH asking if I can REGISTER nameservers.
Pretty much they have to do it, I can't do it?
Bec on their panel, it has a place to SET nameservers and a custom DNS where I can create ns1.magentobr.com and add value A with the IP.

So I drew this here:

SCAN0001.JPG

So when I register domain.com do I have to SET to my nameserver or just leave as it is?
On the DNSONLY servers, I don't have to do much correct? On CPANEL server I just add the nameservers?
And on the CPANEL server I set my website (my main domain) or that would be with the registrar?
I don't have to set any DNS on rackspace correct???

I get my domains from enom.com and they allow us to register and verify nameservers ourselves. Literally takes a couple of minutes.

Here is screenshot of the page where i do this.

I would imagine that they probably call it "setting" nameservers, i would call it "registering nameservers". Basically you just need to be able to CREATE nameservers for magentobr.com.

So when I register domain.com do I have to SET to my nameserver or just leave as it is?
No, You can leave it as it is. I think you have magentobr.com with dns1.stabletransit.com + dns2.stabletransit.com which is fine, no need to touch it for now.

Correct. On DNS ONLY server, no need to do anything (apart from make it secure but this is another story later on). On the main cpanel server, you need to configure the cluster.

Here is how to find the dns cluster configuration panel in cpanel.

On the cpanel server, you dont need to set anything in regards to dns. The dns for magentobr.com will be dns1.stabletransit.com + dns2.stabletransit.com.

The only thing you iwll need to do on the rackspace dns panel is add two subdomains. One called ns1.magentobr.com and ns2.magentobr.com and assign them a name records with the dnsonly servers. Although you can get away without providing these records, its good practice.

WOW! This should be pinned as a tutorial!
THANKS!
I am trying my last resource with dreamhost, setting custom records, but looks like it won't work.
Do I really need 2 servers with dnsonly? Couldnt I use just the server with the cpanel? Or one with cpanel and other with dnsonly?

You also have the rdns working correct?

I also have the same question, Do I really need 2 servers with DNS only? Is it possible to just use 1 server with DNS only?

I think you need 2 because you need 2 IPs

In that case I would already have 2 IP's, 1 from the real cPanel server and 1 from the cPanel DNS only server. In this situation would 2 separate DNS only servers still be required?
I think that way will also work, but you gonna use resource from your server.
What I am going to do is get 2 256MB servers and install the DNSONLY and leave it as DNS servers.
