To my knowledge that isn't default behaviour and would only occur if you've configured the account to do so. Is there an .htaccess file or cms installed in the account you're testing?

This most definitely is not default behavior as ThinIce states.

Again, as ThinIce mentioned, you would want to check the .htaccess file at /home/username/public_html/.htaccess location (where username is the cPanel username) for one of the accounts exhibiting this behavior. Since the file begins with a period (.), it is a hidden file, so you would either want to view it in root SSH using the command "cat /home/username/public_html/.htaccess" or in cPanel > File Manager and select to show hidden files there.

    Hi ThinIce / Tristan,

Thank you for the replies. I've taken a look into it and it does seem due to the Wordpress install.

For some reason the subdomain creation is giving a error "Sorry, www cannot be used in subdomains. It is implicitly added to all newly created subdomains. " The www record does exist though, only the domain's DNS servers are not using the CPanel box (External DNS).

But that is another matter which I'll research on Google.
