We've experienced an issue recently where we had to perform an O/S restore and we had to restore from off-server backups.

However, it did not restore previously modified DNS files and restored them to WHM's usual version, which caused many sites to go down, email to stop etc.

Is there a way of backing up modified DNS zones?

Note, if you don't have any custom setup and WHM's default DNS settings are causing your websites to not function and email is not working - that's a major issue that you should submit a support ticket about so it can be corrected.

    Hi David,

Yes, because the restores cPanel did, did not contain clients modified DNS records.

Ah, okay. Just making sure it wasn't the entries cPanel/WHM generates automatically is causing records that should be pointing to your server to not function properly. I've come across many machines where that happens and people just naturally assume as a result that cPanel/WHM doesn't properly handle DNS automatically.

However, in the case of custom DNS records, those would not be transferred during a backup/restore as you have noted :).
