I'm not sure if this is possible or not but hell I'll ask anyway ;)

We have a centralised off-site storage server that we are currently using for backing up Windows machines via a VPN connection.

Now at the moment we are backing up cPanel accounts via FTP to this server network but I wondered if it would be possible to backup from the cPanel servers via a VPN connection in the same way as the Windows servers?

This would be quicker and more secure than FTP in my eyes.

    Can it be done?

    Hi goregous ;)

Yes it's possible. We do this Linux-Linux. We have a secure SSH tunnel set up (VPN) and we just mount the backup server's directory on each cPanel box.

    OpenVPN is your friend :)

    yum install openvpn

config it, then install it on your windows box.

Share a folder on windows, and mount it on the linux one, then update cpBackup config to reflect the backup location

No good. I already have Windows VPN server setup, I just need a Linux client to connect from the Nix box...

Believe me after the trauma of getting RRAS working on Windows I'm not about to change it!
