I'm a bit out of the loop with the current state or progress of the Cpanel backup system.
Basically, I want to be able to backup and restore from both local and remote incremental backup location. Is this currently possible?

Hi to all.

I would like to ask how to retrieve the deleted CUR mail in file manager. All the emails in inbox are gone for all the email accounts.
I have accidentally deleted it and unfortunately clicked the permanent deleted.

I am new in Cpanel and I don't have idea for some IT stuffs.

Thank you.

Sorry to revive this semi-old thread. I just have some clarifications for these stuff that I don't find word in the docs.

1. When restoring remote incremental backups, the whole set of remote files must be copied first locally right?
If yes, what directory in the local server should we copy the files into?

2. It is it possible to use Incremental backups purely on remote location, at least during backups?
Meaning, there is no initial "whole" copy that exist locally, and the initial whole copy only resides remotely?

Remote restoration can only be done with Destinations of the type listed:
  • Amazon S3™
  • FTP
  • Google Drive™
  • S3 Compatible
  • SFTP
  • WebDAV
  • A local directory
  • Custom locations
RSYNC is not a backup transport method that is supported and incremental remote backups must be transported using RSYNC

In order to restore these you'd need to manually move them back or use rsync to restore them from the remote location.

Yes I read that too but my questions was not answered clearly at least on that page.

1. So what you're saying is if we use remote incremental backups, restoration can only be done by "manually" picking the files and copying/rsyncing them directly to the /home/user/ directory?

2. Clarification on this phrase in the doc:

To restore backups from these locations, users must transfer the backup file to their servers before they can restore the backups.
What directory in the local server should we copy the files into?

For 1, yes that's correct.

For 2. it depends on who you want to be able to restore the backups. If you want a user to be able to restore them then any directory accessible by the user. By default the location automated backups are stored is /backup.
The file and directory restoration feature would be really useful for this I believe and is referenced here: How to Manage Metadata Settings | cPanel & WHM Documentation

Thanks. #2 is still confusing but just to put it simply, using remote incremental backups will not allow the user to restore on their own without "manual" assistance from the server admin? Because the server admin has to manually download/rsync the files first before the user can perform restores? Unlike remote full backups where users can restore on their own.

Yes, it's silly and needs to be improved especially since all the price increases. Have to use too many different 3rd party software to get cPanel working. There are other options that are all-in-one and cost a lot less.

I hope cPanel improve their backup/restore system asap.
