    Hello,
    I send my daily backups to another server using SFTP.
    Since update 58.0.30, backup script isn't closing connections.

    Example: I have 82 websites, it opens 82 SFTP connections and keep connected or doesn't close the connection gracefully.
    Files are uploaded ok, but connections keep open.

    Problem: my second server is only 256 Mb RAM (VPS). Each connection uses 1.5-1.8 Mb. After open 70 connections, my server freezes due to OOM Killer (kills all services due to out of memory). No problem before update to 58.0.30.

    Any ideias? Thank you.

    I found a temporary solution: set a low idle timeout on SSH connections, since SFTP uploads sends no "keep alive" messages.

    # vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
    ClientAliveInterval 30
    ClientAliveCountMax 0

    Result:
    Sep 27 03:10:39 thor sshd[11999]: subsystem request for sftp
    Sep 27 03:11:21 thor sshd[11999]: Timeout, client not responding.

    Could someone please explain why Cpanel still disables the remote backup destination if connection failes?

    My DC had problems with their backupserver tonight and I had to enable the backup of six servers again.

    WHY on earth would someone EVER wants to automaticly disable the backups.

    .Insane.

    I'm going to preface this by saying that my backup connection works, it validates when clicking the Validate button, and that some accounts do get transferred -- usually a random sampling of accounts covering most of the alphabet; i.e. accounts from A to Z, but not all of them.

    If I SSH in and manually SFTP to the same backup server, all goes well. All accounts transfer. No errors.

    Checking /usr/local/cpanel/logs/cpbackup_transporter.log, I see the following:

    Code:
    <snip>

    Can someone verify whether this is actually a connection issue, or if something's messed up with cPanel? I haven't had a successful backup transport in over a week (aside from manually SFTPing from shell).

    Any input appreciated!

    Similar issue. The trouble started few days ago. I have 2 backup destinations on different hosts/locations

    Got few error emails from cPanel on server.xxxx.com <cpanel@server.xxxx.com> like this:

    Unable to send “/home/backup/weekly/2016-10-02/accounts/xxxx.tar.gz” to destination “BackupHost1”
    Unable to send “/home/backup/weekly/2016-10-02/accounts/xxxx.tar.gz” to destination “BackupHost2”

    Every times after the error comes up, WHM turn status to 'disabled' for my backup destinations. I enabled it manually thru WHM backup configuration menu, validate it(passed all time) but second backup time WHM turn it to 'disabled' status again.

    Maximum destination timeout 28800 seconds ( 8 hours ). All destinations have enough free space. All passed validation. I have access to its from my server. I can transfer my files using FTP connection to the destinations.

    Please help.

    I am also having this problem, which seemed to start occurring after cPanel updated to 11.58.0.30 on 28 September. Prior to this all backups were transporting correctly (very occasionally I'd get an error but nothing to write home about). Now, some account files are successful while the rest are not, and it's happening on every run.

    They are still failing.
    I first thought it was a problem on the backupserver of my provider but they keep failing.
    Hope this gets fixed soon :(

    Add me to the list as well. This use to be so stable then as of a week ago it keeps falling over. In my case it complains about an authentication problem. However, the system backup and a few accounts always make it over before the authentication error. Backup destination gets disabled. I can enable it and it validates fine. If I do the transfer manually then no issue. This is becoming a serious issue as when the backup transportation fails it leaves the backups on the server. If you aren't careful it fills up the servers drive and then you are in real trouble.

    Hello,

    Internal case CPANEL-8972 is open to address this issue. To paraphrase the case description, this happens when the backup transporter creates new control connections for each file upload to the remote server, but then does not close the handle until the transporter process stops. Under some conditions, depending on how many uploads happen during a single transporter session, this can cause the transporter to run out of allowed connection slots on the server, or hit other resource limits on the server, resulting in a sequence of upload failures. This results in error messages like this in /usr/local/cpanel/logs/cpbackup_transporter.log:

    Code:
    Cpanel::LoggerAdapter::warn(Cpanel::LoggerAdapter=HASH(0xe73f38), "Unable to get connection to transport id: nxESfKBmFDpNUGqlVo"...) called at /usr/local/cpanel/Cpanel/Backup/Queue.pm line 200
    In addition, it's also evident with error messages like this in /usr/local/cpanel/logs/error_log:

    Code:
    info [cpbackup_transporter] Net::FTP=GLOB(0x24216a8) <<<  421 Too many connections (8) from this IP
    info [cpbackup_transporter] Error encountered
    info [cpbackup_transporter] Error is an object reference of type ref Cpanel::Transport::Exception::Network::Connection=HASH(0x23e1d78)
    I'll update this thread once the resolution to this issue is published. In the meantime, the temporary workaround is to increase the FTP connection limit, or in the case of SFTP, to adjust any resource limits preventing the SFTP user from spwaning enough child processes to handle the extra connections.

    Thank you.

    Dear Michael,

    Thank you for your response.
    Glad to see the problem is acknowledged.

    I get this error instead of the one you mention:

    Code:
    [2016-10-09 02:43:58 +0200] info [cpbackup_transporter] Net::FTP=GLOB(0x2d116a0) <<<  530 Sorry, no more connections for your ip
    I see this back on every day the backup problem occurs.

    Despite doubling the allowed ftp connections to 16 the backups where again disabled this morning.

    Code:
    [2016-10-10 04:25:30 +0200] info [cpbackup_transporter] Net::FTP=GLOB(0x3a2daa0) <<<  530 Sorry, no more connections for your ip

    Hello @fate12,

    That error message is a common symptom of CPANEL-8972. To confirm, are you increasing the connection limit on the remote FTP server as a temporary workaround? It's important to increase the value on the remote FTP server itself, as opposed to adjusting the value on the cPanel server.

    Thank you.

    Hi Michael,

    I can't change the configuration of the remote FTP server, it is from our DC.
    Any idea when this will be fixed?

    Thanks

    I asked my DC, a max of 10 connections is the maximum and they won't adjust it.
    Is there somewhere in Cpanel I can tell it to use max 10 outgoing connections?

    Hello @fate12,

    Adjusting the local FTP settings would not act as a workaround to this issue. The resolution for this bug is tentatively scheduled for inclusion with cPanel version 58.0.33. It's also included with cPanel version 60 (tentatively scheduled for publication to the "Current" build tier later today). I'll update this thread as soon as both versions are published.

    Thank you.

    Hello @Lor,

    cPanel version 60 is now available under the "Current" build tier and includes a resolution for this issue. I'll update this thread once the resolution is published to a cPanel 58 build tier.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

    To update, the case is now available in cPanel version 58.0.34 as well:

    Fixed case CPANEL-8972: Rebuild transport objects correctly.

    Thank you.
