Posted this over on WHT here

Thought I'd try it over here

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on what would be the best training solution for basic to mid level to advanced Linux system administration. We are currently looking at the training opportunities from redhat.com. Has anyone been to these? Are they any good? Opinions? Comments?

    TIA

Certifications & degrees are overrated and not to mention a waste of money. Pickup a couple of books and learn as you go; an on-hands education will teach you more in 6 months than a 4 year degree/4 week certification.

Books and practice is how I learned what I know, and it's fun too. :)

You have probably heard this but buying a cheap used computer and cheap colo or a dsl connection will do soooo much.

My first test box got hacked like 10 times in two months debugging and general admin duties came fast from the real life scenarios.

    Good luck

    I could not agree more.
I'd take someone who has a year of real world administration and support over a person with just a 4 year degree alone any time.
