Customer wants to close some email accounts, as spam is overwhelming. But he also wants to send an autoresponder so that legitimate people sending to the old address will know it is no longer good, and possibly even give the new email address.

I thought of limiting the quota to a super small amount - so that no emails would go in there, but then the autoresponder doesn't work. In fact, the sender doesn't even get a mail rejected bounce-back.

Any suggestions on how to limit all email coming in, but also send autoresponders (or at minimum send them a bounce?)

You could try manually editing the valiases file so that it has the autoresponse bit, then after that :blackhole:

If you just make the mailbox too small then the mail will build up in the queue. Another way to do it is to just have it in the valiases file as:

address@domain.com: :fail: This address no longer works. Please email me at somethingelse@domain.com

Be warned though, any new addresses that are sent back have a good chance of getting put on the spammers list if the spammer is watching what info gets sent back (had that happen before).

    Hi Justin,

thanks for your help. I don't know how to access the server myself - i assume there is no way to do what you suggested in cpanel?

I had thought about your warning about a responder with email address, so i was going to have a phone # put in instead.
