Ok - I am new here and have some questions. I have set up and enabled my boxtrapper, white list, spam ass., etc.

Now how do you view the spam box, should it be on the squirrel mail email page? Do I have to have everyone create one? I enabled the spam box already.

If a particuar email address is not on the white list - how do you test that an acknowledgment email is being sent to them questioning if they are ok or not? We thought that an email was sent to someone stating that the email didn't go thru and that they could contact me to be put on our white "safe" list. Are we wrong?

I also am confused on the spam ass. and how that works - can someone do some explaining to me on some suggestions on this?

In Squirrelmail, if you do not see a "Spam" folder, you will need to subscribe to it. This is a quirk of Squirrelmail. Horde and RoundCube do not share this abnormal behavior.

Are you talking about SpamAssassin Whitelists or BoxTrapper Whitelists? They are two different things.

SpamAssassin will assign a score to all incoming email. This score reflects the liklihood of it being spam. Any negative score indicated the message is likely NOT spam. Anything over 0 indicates a possibility of it being spam. As this system is not perfect, you can set your own thresholds for what you would consider to be spam. Typically, anything with a score of 5.0 or higher is considered spam. However, you can adjust the sensitivity of this as you desire - lower numbers being more sensitive, higher numbers being less sensitive.

SpamBox will take any message exceeding a specific spam score (IIRC, 5.0 by default) and place it in a folder called spam. This threshold can be different from the threshold you set for flagging a message as spam.

Note, as POP3 does not support folders natively, those using POP3 will be unable to retrieve the contents of their spambox unless they login to a special POP3 account of email@example.com/spam where email@example.com is their email address. Note, this only works for the spam folder, not any other folders in their account.

    still more questions.....

I have all my emails on the white list on the boxtrapper. There are alot - should they be on the spam ass. also? Should I be running both like I am?

I should have everyone subscribe to a spam (create a folder) in their squirrel mail, right?

If I make the score 0 instead of 5.0 will it eliminate more. What we are finding is we are getting bounce backs from "some" of the clients. This may be something on their end though - since the changed over to squirrel mail. And some of our client emails seem to go into "who knows where".

    HELP!

SpamAssassin and BoxTrapper are completely separate systems, thus they do not share a whitelist. However, you shouldn't need to whitelist yourself on SpamAssassin so long as you are not receiving spam from those addresses.

The folder would already exist upon enabling spambox. Squirrelmail is just counter intuitive in the sense you typically need to subscribe to folders so you can use them in Squirrelmail.

It will also flag more legitimate email as spam. There is a balance to be struck here, 5.0 seems to be the industry standard for what most consider a good balance of false-positives vs. curbing spam.

You should check your mail logs, see what they say.

With BoxTrapper, an automatic email is sent the instant the mail server receives the message to an account that has BoxTrapper enabled. Once the user replies to this message, they are whitelisted and never get this message again.

Check the following mail logs as they may be able to indicate why messages are not being delivered:

    /var/log/exim_mainlog
    /var/log/exim_rejectlog
/var/log/exim_paniclog (this one should be empty)

    enabled boxtrapper

I have the boxtrapper enabled for all of our employees.

Example: my mom who is NOT on the white list, emailed me, she went directly to my junk box and never rec'd an email to be added to the white list. You I have to respond to her email first......I don't understand the process. If I would have added her then would she have gotten the email?

Do they only get an email if NOT on the white list or it they are ON the white list they need to respond to one first to confirm/then eveything would be ok?

If they didn't then can I resend one to them one somehow?

This is the last of my questions, I think. Thank you so much for the info.

That is not how BoxTrapper works. It works as follows (with many of the technical details omitted for readability):

    1. Mom sends you email
    2. Your server receives email
    3. Is this email address protected by BoxTrapper? Yes
    4. Is this user on the BoxTrapper Whitelist? No
    5. Hold email in queue
    6. Send message to Mom asking her to reply to the automated message to prove she is human.
    ---
    7. Mom replies to message
    8. Your server receives email
    9. Detects this is a boxtrapper email
    10. Processes the email such that Mom is now whitelisted
    ---
    11. Delivers original email
    12. Thanks Mom for verifying she is human, tells her that her original message was delivered

They only get an email when they are not yet on the white list.

In BoxTrapper, if the user does not reply to the email - they are not human and must be a SpamBot thus the message is never delivered. They must reply to the BoxTrapper message to have their original message delivered.

This is one of many reasons that some people do not like BoxTrapper and simply do not use it.

    one more question?

    Ok in this case
    1. mom is NOT on the white list
    2. mom sends email
    3. box trapper is enabled for email address
    4. mom did not rec an automatic email to respond to
    5. email went directly into the spam folder in my outlook
    6. mom still not on white list

Am I missing something??? Is something not turned on???

Convenience or not, I've got to say this - Boxtrapper is just a spam producer (as far as recipients are concerned). If I receive a message from somebody using boxtrapper, the last thing I'll do is click on it. It's spam to me. A system shouldnt' be sending out verification emails. You could get 1000 incoming spam messages a day from forged senders, and boxtrapper is going to send out a thousand responses to the forged senders (which they will consider spam). No good can come from using Boxtrapper. You should abandon the idea and configure your system so that it adequately nails actual spam and deletes it or puts in a spam folder rather than counting on boxtrapper to do the job.

As previously stated, SpamAssassin is a completely different system. Turning on SpamAssassin does not turn on BoxTrapper and vice-versa.

Is that email address already whitelisted? It seems as if boxtrapper is just letting that email go straight through.
