    I'm not sure what happened but for some reason I can no longer extract tar.gz files in my Cpanel accounts via the "extract" function logged in as root or as a user.

    I use these to overwrite certain files while performing CMS updates on the accounts.

    The error I get now while attempting this is as follows;
    tar: gzip: Cannot exec: Permission denied
    tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
    tar: Child returned status 2
    tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

    I'm running cPanel 11.25.0-C42213 - WHM 11.25.0 - X 3.9

    Is anyone else experiencing this recently or has anyone got any ideas what is causing it?

    I had this same issue. I also found i couldnt run vi editor and various other binaries.

    The outcome of my experience, the server was compromised. They renamed binaries so you cant run basic commands etc.

    I am still getting through it...

    Just mentioned as it would be worth checking.

    It looks like they take over an account and then take over the server and cpanel stops functioning correctly.

    Boy I hope that's not the case. Everything else seems to be working fine.

    Anyone else experiencing this?...or have suggestions? I have some CMS's that I have got to get updated or I will have a compromised server.
