Just wanna know if this can be done.

Say, we want to add other stuff to cPanel and Fantastico, can it be done? Is it allowed? If so, where do we go to do it?

Let's say, for example, cPanel didn't have PhpBB and I wanted it to have it. Could I install it? Where would I go, as directory, on the server to do it?

Lots of studying to do, but for starters, you can customize the cPanel skin all you want. In shell:
    cp -a /usr/local/cpanel/base/frontend/x /usr/local/cpanel/base/frontend/newthemename

Do whatever you want to your newthemename. If you modify the current themes, your changes will be over-written with some cpanel upgrades.

I cloned the template and downloaded it to my local pc. When I try to extract the tar.gz file with winrar, I get some symlinks errors or something in that nature. I can see all the files if I browse the archive, I just don't know how to extract it.

    any pointers

Just ignore the symlink errors. Windows can't handle them. When you upload your changed files, the symlinks won't be affected.

ok, the extraction only extracts a few files and complains about the problems. I guess I should try something different than winrar?

    Go on, have a guess
And if you want to play with adding your own products take a look at www.openinstaller.com and have a look how it's done in their code which is has an open source license.

The Fantastico people have been talking about releasing an open spec so anyone can add fantastico-installable modules to their servers. Not sure how far that has progressed but you may want to check that out.
