SOLVED Cannot add address 192.168.1.0: it is the address of the network.

I have an IP block of 192.168.1.0/26 on a server. I will be moving these IP to a new server soon.

When adding IP addresses to the new server, I get the following error.

Cannot add address 192.168.1.0: it is the address of the network.

Recall this being an issue when the IP block was first configured on on the old server.

I cannot figure out how we were able to get 192.168.1.0 as an IP on the new server.

I have changed the idenity of the IP addresses to protect their privacy.

If I edit file:

/etc/ips

by adding the following line, would that make it available as a configurable IP?

192.168.1.0:255.255.255.0:192.168.1.255

I was able to edit the /etc/ips file and added 192.168.1.0:255.255.255.0:192.168.1.255 to the end of the file. I then rebooted and they are now available as IP alias.

Hey there! I'm glad you were able to find a workaround, but I believe that's the intended behavior. IPs ending in .0 or .255 aren't something that normally can be added for use on the internet. There's some good discussion on this here:
