    Hello,

When I use WHM to restart BIND, I get the error:
named has failed, please contact the sysadmin (result was "named is not running"). Sep 24 08:46:59 server named[3040]: shutting down: flushing changes Sep 24 08:46:59 server named[3040]: stopping command channel on 127.0.0.1#953 Sep 24 08:46:59 server named[3040]: no longer listening on 127.0.0.1#53 Sep 24 08:46:59 server named[3040]: no longer listening on ........

server named[7138]: couldn't open pid file '/var/run/named/named.pid': Permission denied Sep 24 08:47:00 server named[7138]: exiting (due to early fatal error)

    Are these permissions correct?
    root@server [/var]# ls -al run
    total 15
    drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 1024 Sep 24 08:09 ./

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6 Sep 22 19:14 xinetd.pid

However, I can restart it from a shell with:
    service named restart
    (have to do this twice)

Any idea why I can't restart it from WHM?

    System:
    WHM 9.7.2 cPanel 9.7.7-R15
    Fedora i686 - WHM X v3.1.0
    This is a VPS (virtuozzo)

    thanks for any suggestions.

    Question, under /var/run/named

who owns and what are the perms for named.pid

    Mine are:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 named named 5 Sep 22 06:46 named.pid

And mine seem to start from CPanel just fine. :) Not sure if that's the problem or not

    Mine are the same:

    drwxrwx--- 2 named named 1024 Sep 24 09:01 ./
    drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 1024 Sep 24 08:09 ../
    -rw-r--r-- 1 named named 5 Sep 24 09:01 named.pid

did you by and chance, check the named log files.. they might have a little more detail in there..

I can't remember if named also logs to messages or not.. but I'd check there too..

    Hi
I am getting the same messages from WHM too. I notice that bind does actually restart but throws these errors at the same time.

For me this is only happening since installing WHM 9.7.2 cPanel 9.7.7-R15 on a new server and not on any older release versions so is it an WHM error?

    Regards
    Andrew Haley

Anyone have any ideas on this? Log files show nothing other than noted in my first message.

When starting named from shell after the error message in WHM, here are the messages:

    root@server [/var/log]# service named restart
Stopping named: rndc: connect failed: connection refused
    [FAILED]
    Starting named: [ OK ]
    root@server [/var/log]# service named restart
    Stopping named: [ OK ]
    Starting named: [ OK ]

I have tried the fixndc with the result:
    named.conf has already been fixed!

Tnanks for any ideas suggestions you may have!

Ditto, I get the same error ("rndc: connect failed: connection refused") and I have repeatedly run /scripts/fixndc.
Does anyone have a recommendation besides the fixndc script?
