i can ftp fine with cpanel account but i can't ftp root.

it says wrong username/password when i do
    username: root
    password: WHM port 2087 password

i can ssh with the same info above^

how can i get the correct login info? or is that even the problem?

    Hi,

Which FTP client you are using?

    ws

    i'm using Ws_FTP

i also tried going through ie by ftp://root : pass@site but that didn't work either

    EDIT

here is the /etc/passwd file: (thought it might help)
    /etc/Shadow:

i was messing around with those two files (passwd and shadow) and now user2 ftp goes to a empty folder with NO files in it....did i just make everything worse?

    thx in advance

    It's OK!

You're not meant to FTP your server using root account. In fact, you should avoid using it if it is not absolutely needed. You should use su instead.

But if you really want to transfer files using your root account, then you shall use SCP protocol. If you use (argh!) Windows, look for a program named WinSCP. If you use Linux, try a program named gftp, that is the standard graphic FTP client for Gnome. I'm sure it does support SCP. I can't say anything about this question and other OSs.

thx for the tip but you see, the weird thing is that i could easily connect to it 4 days ago, before my old hard drive fried.....then i installed a new hard drive, new windows, new ws_ftp and i can't connect

note that on the old ws_ftp, i had the password saved so i never entered it and that's why i don't remember the password....is their anyway to reset the root password for ftp or to change it? ...through shell or any other method (i have physical access to the servers as well) they're about an hour away.

is there anything that i can do remotely or on-site?

    WHOOHOOO!

after about a week of not having remote ftp access to my server and messing around with the passwd and shadow files and actually messing some other things up...i just figured out that i'm supposed to use SFTP instead of FTP........what a relief!

    hope this helps someone someday.

    cheers.
