My CPanel backups have started to fail with the following message:

Creating Archive ..../bin/gtar: backup-11.5.2010_22-37-38_nelli/homedir.tar: file changed as we read it
    Done
    pkgacctfile is: /home/nelli/backup-11.5.2010_22-37-38_nelli.tar.gz
    md5sum is: 68ca8b02b6943f2209a462336d39608e

    size is: 5745355
/bin/gtar: /home/backup-11.5.2010_22-37-38_nelli/homedir.tar: Cannot open: No such file or directory
/bin/gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I've read some postings relative to this statement, but they all referred to items like MySQL databases, etc. that could be changing concurrently with the backup. But my message appears to be referring to the backup tar file itself. It appears to me that the gzipping of the tar file is occurring before the tar file has finished being created.

Has anyone else seen this and knows what the issue/resolution might be? I have plenty of disk space on the account so it's not having trouble with enough space to create the tar file.

Today, I've gotten a different error:

    pkgacctfile is: /home/nelli/backup-11.7.2010_09-58-11_nelli.tar.gz
    md5sum is: 7c9fb2347e78657315e27431f4fec271

    size is: 5077836
/bin/gtar: /home/backup-11.7.2010_09-58-11_nelli/homedir.tar: Cannot open: No such file or directory
/bin/gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

What does this error mean? How can no file or directory be found, yet a resulted .tar.gz file be created, but at a fraction of the expected size?

This error occurred on 5 of my 6 accounts, whereas the error reported before occurred on 1 of the 6 accounts.

My accounts are on CPanel 11.28.13

I'm getting the same kind of errors everyday since the upgrade to 11.28.
My cpbackup log files have also increased in size from about 60kb to 90kb a day.
I'm on 11.28.35 at the moment.

peak.rrd../bin/gtar: /backup/cpbackup/daily/exp/homedir.tar: Cannot open: No such file or directory
/bin/gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Creating Archive ..../bin/gtar: /backup/cpbackup/daily/john/homedir.tar: Cannot open: No such file or directory
/bin/gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Could this be caused by clamav, lfd or any other process accessing the file during backup?

I have submitted a ticket for this. What i noticed:
    - Problems appeared starting from 09 Nov 2010. I was upgraded to 11.28.28 that day.
    - /scripts/cpbackup and /scripts/pkgacct are also dated 09/Nov/2010.
    - homedir.tar itself seems to be 100%. Problem appears when it is added to <user>.tar.gz

My best bett would indeed be that maybe the file is added too soon. Maybe a pause between tarring the homedir and creating the full backup can act as a temp fix?

I would advise anyone to check their log files and please post here if you have them same problems.

    i have the same error.

Creating Archive ..../bin/gtar: site/homedir.tar: file changed as we read it

i'v noticed that mysql dump starting while tar is still running!
so when backup done, the tar is still running in background.
    my backup is about 10gb.

My ticket was escalated to level 3 support staff.

I would advise you both to also create a ticket and mention this thread, I assume it will help getting the issue solved faster.

I've only had superb experiences with cPanel Support Staff in the past so don't be afraid to open a ticket :)

Surprisingly, the last 2 backup runs went without problems.
Are you guys still having problems?

cPanel Support couldn't identify the problem either.
I would suggest that at least the homedir.tar is "verified" (file size check perhaps?) after it's been added t <user>.tar.gz. At least this way an error can be raised an you are notified.

Looks like I don't have a Support Center. The only thing I have under Support is Configure Customer Contact.

Please use the link in my signature to submit a ticket and select "Submit a Support Request without Logging In" option. Of note, if you are a reseller for a machine and not the actual root WHM login user, you should open the ticket with your provider. We do require root WHM and root SSH access to troubleshoot issues.

I recently started having the same problem too, backups for one particular account (the largest and busiest one) have been failing every day for the past week or so with the same error.

I have set update option to "Automatic (STABLE tree)" in WHM Update Preferences.
after that WHM has downgraded to version 11.26.20
with this version there is no such problem with backup ;)

Internal case 44803 has been opened to track this problem. We have not yet had any luck replicating this problem internally. Please do open a ticket and reference case number 44803 if you are experiencing this issue.

Hello, I had the same problem since the 5 of november. I had between 5 or 10 backup failed each night. Yesterday I change the "Extra CPUs for server load" value (WHM - Tweak Settings) from 0 to 5 and tonight all my backup run ok.

    Hi,

Same problem here, I have updated cpanel to v11.28.45, checked two servers and on both full backup is not completed.
