I seen this here before. I am on Centos 3.9 and need to upgrade as far as I can get. I know there is some tricky things from Centos 3.x to 4.x. Does any one have experienace in this upgrade and how much will this cost me?

    Thank you

centos is free, you can download the distribution from centos.org

the only problem is centos not upgrade just like add some water to the glass, you need to empty that glass and then fill it again.

so you need to backup and do a clean instalation.

    Ouch.
Is it like that with every centos upgrade, or just major? (3 -> 5 (current), is pretty major)

I am on CENTOS Enterprise 4.6, how hard will it be for me to upgrade, when it comes to having to be done?

It is possible to upgrade from CentOS v3.x to v4.x.

It takes good planning, preparation, and time before attempting the upgrade. The backup of the entire /etc directory, personal and clients' data, and settings is always a good idea in any case.

You have two options to upgrade, let's say from v4.6 to v5.2:
    • Download the .iso of Centos v5 (DVD version) and burn to a DVD.
    • Run the following command at the prompt /usr/bin/yum upgrade to upgrade from the DVD repos.

As to which upgrade method you choose, it has a lot to do with your expertise and tolerance of pain. Doing a fresh installation of v5.x followed by reconfiguring, transferring, and restoring your personal and client's data well be the least painful approach. That way you get a fully functional OS, pain and hassle free.

Although we had to clean up, remove, and then re-install many packages from scratch, the upgrade from v4.x to v5.2 went just fine.
