check valid recipient at SMTP time

Over the last week or two we've noticed that are queue is growing abnormally large with failed bounce messages. The behavior of exim seems to have changed so that it is no longer rejecting email at SMTP time for invalid recipients -- instead it is accepting the message and generating a bounce message. We haven't made any changes to the ACLs or anything ourselves. Anyone got any ideas?

I've tried twice to open support tickets with cpanel, but when I log into my account, there are no open tickets shown. I purchased our license from a distributor (Atjeu) and am wondering if that's why I am not able to successfully open a support ticket.

I figured out my problem. We've got a barracuda spam firewall in front of cpanel and at some point someone put the spam firewalls IP in the alwaysrelay file. The IP had been in the file for quite some time, but for some reason the behavior of exim changed on August 2nd when the bounces started queuing. End result, we removed the IP from always relay which solved our problem.

bslabs,

Thank you for this post! I was trying to figure this out for several weeks as we're using Barracuda in front of our cPanel boxes and we were also getting a lot of bounce messages.
