Go on, have a guess
Well, clamav and sim are putting them in there. /tmp should be cleared down automatically by a cron job usually in /etc/cron.daily/tmpwatch though the default age is usually quite big and you might want to shorten it.

What do I need to change in this file so that it will delete the files in /tmp sooner ?

/usr/sbin/tmpwatch 240 /tmp
/usr/sbin/tmpwatch 720 /var/tmp
for d in /var/{cache/man,catman}/{cat?,X11R6/cat?,local/cat?}; do
if [ -d "$d" ]; then
/usr/sbin/tmpwatch -f 720 $d
fi
done

Thanks allready for you help.

Well, the relevant line is:

/usr/sbin/tmpwatch 240 /tmp

and man tmpwatch shows you that the interval is in hours.
