It does depend on where you currently have it installed. What do you get back from:

    whereis freshclam

i think that this is what you want:

    Thank you...

No, it's the location of the binary that is important. Is it in /usr/bin/freshclam or is it in /usr/local/bin/freshclam?

The installation is in the /usr/local/bin/freshclam directories...

Aha! Then you just need to do a stock installation. Download the tarball from http://www.clamav.net and then:

    Code:
    tar -xzf clamav-*
    cd clamav-*
    ./configure
    make
    make install
    freshclam
    cd ..
    /bin/rm -Rf clamav-*

You compiled clamav manually without the sysconfigdir set to /etc

The only way to get rid of the gmp error is to compile from .tar.gz.

You didn't compile properly, as nick pointed out.

    Use this to compile

    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc

Then do make and make install. Remember you need to edit /etc/freshclam.conf and /etc/clamd.conf before you can start to use the new clam. Also many times i have seen old clam files don't get removed if they are being used, so either stop existing clamd or delete the files manually to ensure all new files are installed.
