I have never had a website before, and have recently dived head-first into the exciting world of owning a webpage.

Sadly, I am having one problem- I've uploaded all the files I need, but when I try to go to a page other than the first page, (Index.html) I get the 404 error.

I'm positive I spelled all of the link names right, because it worked with GeoCities.

Can anybody give me some advice?

(By the way, I checked the online manual, but that didn't help)

It would be rather difficult to know unless you posted the link and place of upload.

    Common answer to this is:

Did you upload to "/public_html/" or "www" directory? They have to be located in one of those to be visible on the web.

if you uploaded a page in the /public_html/ directory

Try calling the link from its full path? ie "http://www.mysite.com/mypage.html"

    Try that first.

if you uploaded a page in the /public_html/mydirectory/

    try http://www.mysite.com/mydirectory/mypages.html

public_html is the ROOT of your website..

    Sorry kinda buys..but try those

    Home Page Doesn't Display Automatically

I am new also. Originally, I had the same problem. I new that the files needed to be in the www or public directories. My difficulty was that I had clicked on the NAME of the directory instead of clicking on the folder icon. So, it only seemed that I had changed to that directory but in reality only loaded my files to the root directory. The moral of the story for me was to remember to click on the folder icon itself not the name.

I do have an additional question though. How do get my site to automatically re-direct visitors to the default -or- index -or- some other page when they only enter the domain without entering the specific page?

For example, the user enters: http://www.mysite.com
I want it to automatically take him to my default page. Where do I set this up?

    Thanks

    Automatically Loading Default Page

Just after posting my previous entry I found where you do this.

It is under the Redirects icon. Hope that helps other new users.
