I am getting a lot of errors telling me that I have exceeded the maximum number of connections. Is there anyway I can increase this limit?

You may want to take a look at this post by scollins which may be what you are after:

Even though it refers to an OE error it has been known to correct this issue in other email clients. Let us know here if it was of use for your problem ;)

That should be it, I've been doing that for several clients with success. Do remember to restart courier afterwards. Steps I would advise:

    1. Edit /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc/imapd and increase MAXPERIP

    2. Edit /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc/pop3d and increase MAXPERIP

    3. Restart courier with:

    /scripts/restartsrv_courier

Just in case this helps anyone running FreeBSD, the location is:

    /usr/local/etc/courier-imap/
