cpanel backups - staged before FTP?

When you use the remote FTP backup feature for WHM, does it first stage a copy of the backup on your server and then FTP it, or does it do a file-by-file FTP?

The reason I ask is that if it stages first, it reduces your overall sellable size considerably.

I realize it has to do a MySQL dump first - I'm asking about /home, etc.

Yes. It has to actually create the compressed file before it can move it.

But does it create each compressed file, and then move them, or create all the compressed files at once and then move them all at once?

The latter requires a lot more disk space than the former

One at a time. Backup, compress, login, check/create dirs, move, logout, repeat. I'm pretty sure that's how it goes.
