Hello everyone, my virgin post here.

This must have been asked in the past but I am not having much luck finding the answer: I am setting up my home server that receives no incoming traffic except my desktop PC. I am trying to replicate a server setup for an actual Web site I have hosted on a VPS with a provider that uses cPanel/WHM ( WHM 11.23.2 cPanel 11.23.6 ). I need to learn cPanel and, actually
more importantly, WHM because I don't feel comfortable making any changes at all in fear of ruining the site (well, a couple of sites - it's a VPS).

From what I gathered from this site I could have installed cPanel/WHM under trial license and use it for 15 days. I guess, my problem is that I can't do it all day long for 15 days, so I suspect I will need this on the test server for much longer, preferably permanently.

I would be willing to pay for a certain "light version" license that only lets me run it internally but the cost of the actual production license is prohibitive ( in all honesty I don't understand the true cost of the production license either but it seems in hundreds of dollars per year).

So, what's available for such situation? By the way, what will happen to the install under trial license after 15 days? Will is stop download updates or will it grind the server to a halt?

Any idea or suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to reading an official response from the cPanel team, too!

Why not pick up a 2nd cheap VPS and play there? If you're not familiar with server setup and mgmt it might be far easier for you to go that route.

Well, VPSes come with a lot of stuff that won't be needed - bandwidth/transfer and storage for example. Besides, I don't think there is one less than $35-39/mo of which $9 or $10 / month are for cPanel. Another important issue would be that if I mess something up, I'll have to pay the ISP's tech to fix it whereas the test system can just be rebuilt in couple hours, most of that time on autopilot.

So, I guess, I am still looking for a way to use cPanel on a server that's not connected to the outside world without paying monthly fees.
