We're having a strange problem (i'm a reseller). Suddenly some clients can't acces cpanel and server returns invalid username or password.

I tried to login using my main reseller password, but i didnt work. I also tried password modification, but it didnt work either.

cPanel Build: 9.2.0-STABLE 25

It almost sounds like your provider may have changed the passwords, maybe suspended accounts. Are any accounts over the bandwidth limit? Can you log into your reseller account?

You will probably have to contact your provider about it.

Yep getting this today as well. About 12 accounts suddenly the user password does not work neither does the root password in cpanel. Something is definitely screwed up and appears to be getting worse.

The problem appears to be people disappearing off the /etc/shadow file. What we did was to retrieve the data for the username from the /etc/shadow,v file and paste it into the end of the /etc/shadow file. This fixes the problem temporarily. However today I notice that another 5 people have 'vanished' off the shadow file and cannot login.

WE have this problem with a few hundred accounts... If we click list suspended , all the ones that don't work are listed there, if we try to unsuspend them we get an error when it hits the passwd part:

passwd: Unsafe operation (use -f to force)

Has anyone else seen this?

Did you try syncing passwords by using the selection in WHM? I do not see that anyone has tried that.

couldn't find it..closest i found was 'synch ftp passwords'

Either way, when i used 'password modification' it synches the passwd file during that process:
Changing password for abcd
Password for abcd has been changed
Attempting FP Password change
Found service.pwd!
Changed Frontpage Password
Updating mysql database access...

Done

Ftp Updating...

Ftp Password Files synced
Vhost Passwords synced
