I am a HostGator's (Linux Hosting) customer who would like to create FTP accounts which:
-) Have permission to download files
-) Do NOT have permission to upload nor delete/copy/move files
So, this users, which would have a specific UserName/Password (NOT anonymous login), would be able to see/browse all files and folders from a main path, download all files they want, but making changes to files/folders structure and contents would be denied...
The HostGator's support guys told me this is NOT possible, only cPanel could change this reality; what is a big handicap for me...
cPanel should allow to configure ProFTPd or simply allow to control FTP Accounts' PERMISSIONS!!...
I tried to change attributes/permissions (CHMOD) using FTP and SSH and SFTP clients; but I got strange phenomenons! - When I change the permission, my FTP client tells me "OK, permissions now changed to ____"; however, this new permissions simply do NOT work - all changes I try to make are 100% IGNORED despite showing a message of (fake) success...
Thus, the last hope is... cPanel itself...

Thanks.
Regards.
