cPanel SSL key/certificate management and OpenSSL

Following a manual update of OpenSSL to the latest, secure version, cPanel's certificate and key management and installation utilities fail to process installations of keys and certificates. The error message provided is "[a fatal error or timeout occurred while processing this directive]". Has anyone else encountered this problem, and is there a fix for it?

I was forced to perform a manual update of OpenSSL (built from source) as no builtin update function would update OpenSSL to the latest version. The version I installed was openssl-0.9.8d (latest), and the version that appears to be the latest in cPanel is openssl-0.9.8a, which has several known security issues.
