I've Just moved my cpanel sever to a new machine. now users can't change their password through their cPanel interface. I can change is from the WHM interface, but the user get the following error.

    Changing password for user cdawg.
    Changing password for cdawg
    (current) UNIX password:
    passwd: Authentication token manipulation error

i checked /var/log/secure and found this:

    Dec 3 09:56:34 hopper Cp-Wrap[7587]: CP-Wrapper terminated without error
Dec 3 09:57:25 hopper unix_chkpwd[7626]: check pass; user unknown
Dec 3 09:57:25 hopper unix_chkpwd[7626]: password check failed for user (cdawg)
    Dec 3 09:57:25 hopper passwd: pam_unix(passwd:chauthtok): authentication failure; logname= uid=631 euid=631 tty=pts/2 ruser= rhost= user=cdawg

It appears that unix_chkpwd can't find the user but the user exists and the uid is correct. i can't figure this one out. Has anyone ever seen this before?

    I'm running cPanel 11.24.5-S38506 - WHM 11.24.2 - X 3.9

Make sure the users are allowed to reset the passwords from cPanel. The setting is under WHM >> Tweak Setting.

Also make sure the suid bit is set for /usr/bin/passwd file i.e. it should be

    -r-s--x--x 1 root root 18200 Aug 21 2005 /usr/bin/passwd*
