No, the icons won't be returning to the Glass style...because Paper Lantern is being removed entirely. (Check out this for more info on how that will be done).

As far as icon customization goes, Jupiter won't have the same styled/ mechanism as Paper Lantern did; we're attempting to simplify/make-more-elegant as much as we can. We'll make sure to release full documentation for how to achieve your goals with customizations and plugins with Jupiter. (I'll even make a note to return to this thread when that stuff is ready in our pre-edge releases)
You understand how that leaves current developers in the dust, right?

- no point in developing for a dead theme (paper_lantern)
- docs for jupiter aren't finalized, so they can't get working on the new theme either

So, what are they supposed to be doing at the moment?

Icons won't be returning to the Glass style, Icons aren't in Jupiter, and Paper Lantern is being removed, so what you're telling us is that going forward, cPanel is a text-only control panel. This news is very helpful for my product decisions going forward. It means that cPanel no longer offers a differentiating feature set vs. just learning how to manage my own server through the commandline.

P.S. I really don't know how to explain 35 years of user interface design to anyone who feels that icons are in any way optional in a user interface. Imagine trying to use your cell phone with just a text list of app names. If this is the long-term plan for cPanel/WHM, then I will need to consider other options. No I'm not going to waste time developing a replacement theme that will likely become incompatible down the road as WHM throws out the next baby with the bathwater and adopts another styling engine.
Icons are making a comeback as explained in this post: cPanel Themes, Icons, and you!

Thanks for all the answers. I look forward to the docs and edge releases with the functionality. For me and the plugin team I work with, support for UI includes is the major blocker. Is there any ETA, release number-wise for this? Can we expect this to land before paper_lantern gets completely removed?

Hi,

Is there any way to add UI includes like in paper_lantern? if not will it be supported in the future? is there an alternative?

Thanks,

Ignacio

Speaking on behalf of myself and my business, we don't want to spend time customizing cpanel. We don't want to be forced to remove stuff that simply isn't needed. For us it's a control panel, not an information centre. Right now with paper lantern, we get something that presents the end user with an interface to manage their hosting. That's what it is for and it works just fine.

We don't want to provide "solutions" from this interface. We have other avenues for that and we don't need another area like this saturating our customers with duplicated information.

I'm sure many will see customization as an opportunity to upsel or advertise their products and services - and I'm sure thats useful for some - but we should have the option to remove the left hand menu and links via WHM's "Features" option - and just have a simple control panel like it has always been until now.

I vote for something not as awful as the Jupiter theme. We are perfectly okay with paper lantern. Based on looks alone, maybe you should depreciate Jupiter first. Jupiter is not something I want to force on my customers. It looks really really bad. Hate it actually. You'd think with all the price increases and higher fees now we'd get better looking themes than this.

Highly Frustrated with the Jupiter Theme

I'd really like to hear from cpanel about these comments. It's very clear that most of your customers do not like this Jupiter theme and don't want to inflict it onto their own customers. You're just going to push so many more of us away to Direct Admin with these really bad design decisions.

These decisions simply can't have been agreed by a group of sane people. You're taking this product in the wrong direction and you're scaring your (until now) loyal customer base. Please listen to us. I've been in this business for 20 years now. You can trust that I and others like me know what we are talking about.

I would like to voice our frustrations as well with Juniper. It's a time-wasting complicated theme just to change a few elements. Cpanel used to be the people's control panel. Truly disappointed in this version. Our clients are as well.

@cPRex and the team, thanks for listening and glad you're working on the feedback received. One request from my end would be to share with us the list of items the team is planning to incorporate into Jupiter along with a release estimate so that there's clear visibility for us. Right now, it's hard to tell from the blog post whether my request to add back "UI Includes" is being considered or not and if it's going to be landing in v102. Similarly, if there are feedback items the team is most definitely not planning to add back in Jupiter, would appreciate if those are listed as well.
