    It turns out we were redirected root's mail on our box to another address (oops!). We just redirected it to actually come to us as the admins. (This was a slip-up on our part, not a security breach.)

    I now get mail every hour saying:

    /bin/bash: root: command not found

    The subject is Cron <root@1n8-35> root run-parts /etc/cron.hourly

    I figured there was some junk job in /etc/cron.hourly. There isn't a single file there. (Including hidden dot files.)

    What on Earth is going on? How can I stop it? I'm getting this crap every hour.

    Go on, have a guess
    Sounds more like a problem with:

    /etc/crontab

    What are the contents of that file on your server? All it should have in it are:

    Code:
    SHELL=/bin/bash
    PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
    MAILTO=root
    HOME=/

    # run-parts
    01 * * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.hourly
    02 4 * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.daily
    22 4 * * 0 root run-parts /etc/cron.weekly
    42 4 1 * * root run-parts /etc/cron.monthly
