I have a managed server where the host says the service doesnt cover installing or supporting csf firewall. I wonder if this is just a convenience to use with whm or if it actually strengthens server security?
im on appache/red hat so the security is via iptables.

CSF does strengthen the security of the server and have number of ways to provide you with various alerts. Once installed, you can manage CSF from WHM but with the default CSF configuration, it will generate a lot of false alarms.

It's a managed server but they don't support CSF? Seems like they're not managing much.

CSF should be considered a necessary tool by almost everyone running cpanel and linux systems. It does much more than just automaticly block things on the firewall. Even if your host doesn't support it, I'd recommend installing it. It's odd that the host doesn't support it though. Do they offer any other type of software firewall?

well the server is running iptables which they say is the firewall and CSF is just a suite of scripts and not a firewall.

CSF (Config Server Firewall) uses iptables. It also some some other nice features built in. It is fairly simple to install if you have root access to the server.

CSF does a great job hardening a server, give it a try.
