i'm looking at where to free up space and I have a folder in mail called /cur. I'm right in thinking this is mail that has been read? If so it is 1.5gig yet the size of the mailboxes do not come anywhere near that figure. What am I missing?

Are you sure you have been purging deleted items from your mailbox? I know many can forget to properly set this up in their IMAP clients.

It would be nice to have some kind of tool to purge email based on age. I know we can use some command-prompt stuff to do it manually, but we have so many people who NEVER delete their email even though they claim they do.

Many Windows mail programs will allow you to purge/delete email based on age. If we had some kind of tool to do this we could clear up alot of these idiot users who dont know how to delete old mail and end up filling up their mailboxes.

The counter-intuitive way IMAP works doesn't help either. Deleting an email doesn't really delete it. You have to essentially "delete it again" for it to be deleted.

I set up my IMAP client to purge deleted email older than 3 days. Of course, a nifty little script to do this server-side would be something I agree many sysAdmins would probably make use of.

Perhaps submit a feature request for this?

    Hi

i found this and it is the best solution:

with this insight is easy to script the whole thing

    also i found this

    http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/6522/3/
    http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/6522/1

it is amazing how can be done with a single command line and two commands combined

i moved all +102 days emails to another folder to further gzip then and send to an external ftp

    regards
    Claudio
