I had an problem with bounced mail today.

A user had set up a default email address of info@theirdomain.com

    so in /etc/valiases/theirdomain.com it had...

    *: info@theirdomain.com

They hadn't set up either a fowarder or a mailbox for info@

They had however set up an autoresponder for info@

The instructions in cPanel say that if they do the last two things (but not the default address) email will be discarded after the auto response message. That's not the case IME.

The emails to info@ ended up bouncing to my root address which as they were using it for mailouts, I was getting a lot of bounces.

To fix it I changed the *: entry in valiases to point to the autoresponder instead of info@.

    ie.

    *: "|/usr/local/cpanel/bin/autorespond info@theirdomain.com /home/theiruserid/.autorespond"

    Worked a treat for me.
