WHat do I have to go about doing to remove cPanel off a server? Ive got a demo which is due to expire soon and I found a free control panel. How do I remove it from the server without formatting the server box?

That's not possible. The cPanel/WHM is well integrated into the OS, so you have no choice but formatting the HD and OS reload.

Thats correct, you cannot completely remove Cpanel from the server. The only option is format and reinstall OS.

According to Cpanel people, Cpanel makes alot of changes to your OS so the only way and the recommended way to remove/uninstall the Cpanel is to format the HD and reinstall the fresh OS.

Just FYI Cpanel people recommend that if during installation, the installation script hangs up for any reason like disconnection of internet connection then instead of resuming or restarting the installation script, format the HD and install the fresh OS and run the installation script again.

You can remove cpanel from your server by deleting its files, most of the files are in

    /usr/local/cpanel
    /var/cpanel

Delete both folders, then remore cpanel related start up files from

    /etc/init.d/

Ah, no. That does not remove cPanel. As has been stated in this thread and many others, the ONLY way to completely remove cPanel is to re-O/S the server.

By doing this, you will remove 90% of cpanel files.

There will be few configuration files left in /etc folder, but they won't create any problem.

Also Apache, exim, bind, but these are not anything critical. You will need them on you server, so better do a reinstall of these application or delete them if not needed. Cpanel do to change the OS, it just install some software. If you are not going to install another control panel, i don't see any reason for reformatting the server.

I have done this on one of my server, on that i just run apache and PHP only, so i just deleted the cpanel folder and reinstalled Apache. If you need a CLEAN system, you can reinstall OS, that is the easy way.

    Go on, have a guess
It most certainly does make a whole raft of OS changes.

If you wish to remove cpanel FORMAT AND REINSTALL THE OS.

Cpanel makes a lot of changes in obscure locations and modifies files in almost all system folders

It is possible to remove cpanel without formatting but the time required to do so is dramitically longer than it would take to format and reinstall and beyond most peoples skill level.

It takes a detailed knowledge of *nix and indepth knowledge of cpanel to remove it.
