Hello, I hope someone can help me out.

I want to disable direct root logins on my redhat cpanel box (I know how to do that), I understand the su to root bit for SSH via putty, but how does this work when logging into and using WHM, do I need to be root on that, also I use an sftp programme called WinSCP anyone know how disabling direct root login affects that.

If these are dumb questions, apologies now.

Its for my own dedi box.

Thanks for helping out a newbie.

    Hello,

You can enter your control panel through root password only, there is no other possibility to log into the control pabel, ONLY ROOT Password

    Thank You.

WinSCP has puTTy included that allows you to "su - " to root from within the program.

    Disable root login

    Hello,

You can safely disable root login for ssh and tellnet. Just make sure to add the user you create for privileged login to the wheel group in whm.

As for disabling root login to WHM, I am not aware of a way that you can do this. If you just don't wish to use root as a whm login because you are afraid of a security breach or such, you can give some other user the privileges in whm that root experiences, but use that user for whatever you need to login and do in whm.

If you disable root login for ssh and tellnet on the box, even if someone did manage to login as root in whm, they would not be able to change that setting there. They could only enable root login in shell.

I hope this is what you were asking.

    Best Regards.
